Discover Some Amazing Wildlife

Many people choose to visit the beach on their vacation, and they end up missing out on some of America's greatest treasures.  The southwest has some of the country's most beautiful landscapes, with mountains and deserts existing side by side.  Visitors to Carlsbad, New Mexico will find themselves in just such a unique location.  With the Guadalupe Mountains on one side, the Chihuahuan Desert on the other, and the Carlsbad Caverns spreading out underneath the surface of the Earth.  This is truly a dream come true for families that are looking for a different vacation where the kids can have fun and still manage to learn something, too.

The Chihuahuan Desert is one of the wettest deserts in the world.  This means that there is actually quite a bit of rainfall throughout the year when compared to other deserts that may never see rain.  The desert is able to sustain some truly amazing wildlife, and when you visit the Carlsbad Caverns National Park, you will be able to enjoy seeing many of the plants and animals that call the desert home.  The summer months are the best time to view the Bat Flight Program.  The Park Rangers give a presentation each evening as the bats leave their roost, and those that rise early can also catch the pre-dawn return.

Rattlesnake Springs at Carlsbad Caverns National Park is also a wonderful area for birding.  In fact the National Audubon Society has named it an Important Bird Area.  The park is home to over three hundred bird species, and the summer months are a great time to see almost every one of those birds.  Actually, birdwatchers from all over the country come to Carlsbad Caverns to see the largest colony of cave swallows in the northern hemisphere, which often surges in numbers because of migration patterns.

Of course, one of the most popular summer activities at Carlsbad Caverns is the Celebrate the Night Sky and Stargazing Party.  The calm summer evenings and the distance from city lights make the park the best place to view the night sky.  The stars are more brilliant with no light pollution, and seem like they might be close enough to touch.  These happen fairly often during the summer, so be sure the check the schedule.  It's usually a Saturday, but as the school year picks back up the days of the week may change.
