The Best of Aurangabad

Aurangabad is 'Built by the Throne'.   The city was named after Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb. Aurangabad is a city in Maharashtra, India.  The city is full of historically acclaimed sites and therefore has become a hub for tourists both local and foreign. The city is well known for its Ellora World heritage sites and Ajanta caves.  Aurangabad is also known as a City of Gates.
History says that Aurangabad was discovered by Malik Ambar in 1610. The city is positioned on a significant trade route that connected land ports to the Deccan region and north-west India's sea. Aurangabad was once a major centre for the production of cotton and silk textiles.

Important places of interest in Aurangabad include Ellora, Ghrishneshwar Shiva temple, Daulatabad fort, Aurangabad caves, Bibi Ka Maqbara and Ajanta caves.  Known as rock-cut cave monuments, Ajanta Caves dates back to the 2nd century BCE. The cave contains sculpture and paintings, which are considered as fine work of art of both universal pictorial art and Buddhist religious art. Bibi Ka Maqbara is an imitation of the Taj Mahal and was built as the resting place of Begum Rabi'a Daurani. Panchakki is an excellent case in point of the history of Indian science. Built in the 17th century, Panchakki is a water-powered flourmill.

Some interesting parks in Aurangabad include Mhaismal hills, Sant Dnyaneshwar garden, Gautala wildlife park and bird sanctuary and Siddarth Garden.

AMT or Aurangabad Municipal Transport is a bus service that covers nearly all parts of the city. Aurangabad also has an International airport. Auto rickshaws are a good way of getting around the city.
Aurangabad can be visited any time of the year. However, between October and March is considered the best time. The city also offers a lot of dining venues. Travellers will also have the opportunity to savour some street food which is also readily available here. From antiques, to cotton and silk absolutely everything is available in the old city markets.
